How can you help?

During our past 6-month H/A tour of the churches, many have expressed wanting to partner with us in order to make a significant impact to the Chinese community in Peru for the Kingdom of God. Here are the ways one can take part in to supporting our efforts:

You can pray

We need you to consistently remember us with your prayers. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood…but against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Pray that during our second term, the LORD will continue to cover us and everything we do with His presence and mercy.

This time returning to Peru for our second term, our primary focus/burden will be:

1. Growth & equipping of believers
God has prepared a number of believers who are dedicated to His service. However they are relatively “new” in their walk with Christ. I’m eager to go back to spend time and train these “potential leaders” then unleash them for God’s service.

2. Full-time worker for Chinese Restaurant ministries
There are several thousands of Chinese restaurants (“chifas”) in Lima. We cannot ignore such a large population who is desperately in need of the Lord’s salvation. We have started the “Chifa Ministry” for over a year now (conducting meetings after midnight in two separate locations). In order to make an effective impact, we need a full-time worker who is focused solely in reaching and serving the restaurant owners and workers.

3. San Borja Chinese Church/Community Center
In Peru, the Chinese people have many needs. The church must address their physical, emotional, social needs in addition to their spiritual needs. Recently the Lord has blessed us with a piece of property which is strategically located in the District of San Borja. Our vision is that this location will be the “new home” for the San Borja Chinese Church; but also it will be a Chinese Center where services will be provided to meet some of the prevalent needs of the Chinese community. Praise the LORD for this property and pray that He will use it to His glory.

You can give

1. San Borja Church/Community Center Construction/Remodeling ($150K USD)
For the purchase of the San Borja property (a 2-story office building on 3,600 sq ft land), we paid $260K USD cash (of which $85K were raised locally). The construction of up to two additional stories and remodeling of the existing structure will provide necessary space for the ministries/services of the Church/Community Center.

2. Car Replacement ($15K USD)
Our 1997 Nissan has broken down twice during the final months prior to our H/A. Upon returning to Lima, we’d start looking for a reliable replacement.

3. Peru Field Operation ($5.6K USD)
For the 2007/2008 fiscal year, all C&MA mission fields around the world will have to raise part of their support for Field Operation. Peru is no exception.

Should you feel burdened to support in any of the above areas, please contact us for further instructions (PastorMChang@GMAIL.COM).

You can go

1. Short-term
We continue to welcome STM teams to come and serve alongside of us. See attached Peru STM sign up schedule for 2008. Please note “possible activities for STM Teams.”

2. Mid-term
We welcome seminarian interns to come to Peru and serve with us.

We will eventually need Chinese speaking Christian medical doctors to staff the Medical Clinic. A team of doctors with each offering two to three months of their time and scheduling them back to back, we should be able to have a clinic open for business full-time serving the Chinese community.

3. Long-term
Lima Chinatown is in need of a full-time worker reaching and ministering to both the old and new immigrants.

Lima has several thousands of Chinese restaurants. This is an un-reached population too large to ignore. A full-time worker is a must to effectively serve this group.

Outside of Lima, Iquitos has the largest concentration of Chinese. It needs a full-time Christian worker.

To effectively administrate and operate the Church/Community Center, a gifted administrator will be needed.

Sorry!!!

Dear Brother/Sister,

In our last e-mail correspondence, I forgot to thank all of you who have contributed prayerfully and financially towards the purchase of the building. It was an oversight on my part, my apologies! We want you to know that you are truely partners with us in the effort of Chinese Evangelism & Church Planting in Peru. Thanks a million!

In Him,

Michael

PTL!!!

Dear Brother/Sister,

On 9/10, the final signing of all the documents by all involved parties was completed. The deal on the building has been closed.

The title of the deed is being registered at the Registros Publicos under the ownership of the Peruvian Alliance Church. After all, we are planting Chinese Alliance churches in Peru.

Our next step is to clarify our vision for a multi-purpose center. Then we need to work with a competent architect to come up with a comprehensive architectural design for the remodeling and construction efforts. We need additional funds for the design and remodeling/construction efforts. We'd like to set a six-month goal to move in. Please continue to pray with us along these lines!

We are touring the churches in California until 10/5 when we fly back to the East Coast for the Joint Eastern Mission Conference (10/6 to 8). On 10/9, we are heading back to Lima.

Sincerely,

Michael & Christina

Union Oyster House-America Oldest Restaurant-Est. 1826

We had a wonderful lobster dinner on Labor Day at the Union Oyster House in downtown Boston (41 Union Street, 617-227-2750). It supposed to be the oldest restaurant in America that has remained in business since its founding.

We were able to get the booth where John F. Kennedy used to sit and read his newspaper when he frequented the store.

Car Fund

Our 1997 Nissan Laurel has given us faithful service since January of 2004. Before we came back for Home Assignment this past April, the car had broken down twice within a couple of months. Next month when we return to Lima, we'd like to find a replacement.

Any offering towards our car fund should be made payable to "C&MA" then sent to:

The Christian & Missionary Alliance
Donor Accounting
P.O. Box 35000
Colorado Springs, CO 80935-3500
(Designate: Car Fund-Michael Chang)

Prayer Requests:

1. Leadership Training
During our 2nd term, we need to focus on systematic training of the believers. We need to raise up Chinese Christian leaders in Peru.

2. Full-time worker for "Chifa Ministry"
To have a more effective ministries among the Chinese restaurant owners and cooks, we need to ask God to send a full-time coworker to be devoted solely for that ministry. With such a coworker, we could focus on the "Church Ministries."

3. Holistic Ministry at the Community Center
The center will have the following functions:
  • Headquarter for Administration & Training of the C&MA Chinese Mission in Peru
  • Site for the San Borja Chinese Church
  • After-school program for the children of immigrants
  • Medical Clinic for the Chinese immigrants
  • Language classes in Spanish, Chinese & English
  • Social/edicational activities/games
  • Dormitory for STM teams

Church Visitation

In addition to the originally scheduled churches (see June 11 blog), the LORD has added additional churches to our list:

8/17 Chinese Evangel Church, Southborough, MA
8/19 Bethany Presbyterian Church, Brookline, MA
8/29 Greater Hartford Chinese Baptist Church, West Hartford, CT
8/31 Rutgus Community Christian Church, Somerset, NJ

9/11 Meeting with Group of Pastors in the LA Area
9/11-12 Home Meetings, Tustin, CA
9/12 to 16 Agape CAC, San Diego, CA
9/21 to 23 Silicon Valley Alliance Church, Milpita, CA
9/24 Chritian Witness Theological Seminary, Concord, CA
9/27 Meeting with Group of Pastors in the Bay Area

10/1 "Chifa" Fellowship Meeting, Walnut Creek, CA

On 9/8 we'll be leaving Boston for Los Angeles. Please keep us in your prayers as we travel and visit the churches in California.

Building Project Update

On 8/8, I received a phone call from my coworkers in San Borja Church that they saw another prospective property for our building project in Lima. All of the coworkers in Lima who have seen it, and we on the States side, have casted an unanimous vote to go ahead with the purchase.

It's a two-story building located on Av. Aviacion (known as the "2nd Chinatown in Lima") between Av. San Borja Norte (1/2 block) and Av. Javier Prado (4 blocks). Its an ideal location and has commercial zoning. It is a bank foreclosed office building held by the Banco de Comercio.

On the first floor, there is a wall-to-wall open space. The land on which the building is on has 3,600 in total square footage. There are several big office spaces on the second floor. The foundation has been designed to withstand the weight of a four-story building.

The final negotiated sale price is $260,000USD. Everything is in place for signing the deal. It could happen any day this week.

About our current meeting location, there has been a change of situation. We didn't need to move on 8/31. The landlord had changed her mind and was selling it to our Peruvian host church. We could stay until we have our own place ready to move in.

Please pray with us for God's leading and protection in the transaction process until the very end.

Virginia Tech Shooting

My heart goes out to the parents of Cho Sheung-Hui. They must be feeling and dealing with a lot of PAIN...SORROW...LOSS...SHAME...and REGRET...

May the LORD also comfort the victims and their immediate family members who are suffering the tragic loss.

May GOD grant me the wisdom and spiritual insight to see this and other tragedies around the world in which we live in!

Chinese Mission of the C&MA in Peru

(Updated 2/27/2007)

Church in Development

Chinese immigration to Peru started 158 years ago. Not until the late 1950’s, the gospel ministry began among the Chinese immigrants here.

In 2003, the Christian & Missionary Alliance in the US sent a missionary couple (Rev. & Mrs. Michael Chang); while the Chinese Churches Association of the C&MA of US as well as Taiwan Alliance Church Union started supporting another couple (Pastor & Mrs. Miguel MacChiu) to serve in Peru. At the time, there was only one Chinese church in the entire Peru. By God’s grace, the new Chinese Mission has started ministries in four key locations in Lima.

1. San Borja
Location: The District of San Borja is located in a more upscale area of the City of Lima, where many mid to upper middle class business owners reside.

Congregation: In 10/2003, the Chinese Alliance Church (CAC) in San Borja came to being. Currently, the CAC in San Borja is consisted of 50 adults, 12 youths & 10 children.

2. Los Olivos
Location: The District of Los Olivos is located in the north of the City. Many new immigrants find it attractive to start businesses there due to the lower cost.

Congregation: The CAC in Los Olivos was established in 6/2004. Currently the congregation is consisted of 15 adults & 5 children. The great majority of them are restaurant owners.

Midnight Chifa Fellowship Service: In April of 2006, we started the Chifa Fellowship Service. Since then the meeting has become a monthly event held in the Chifas. The average attendance is 25 people.

3. Lima Chinatown
Location: Chinatown is located in the City Center of Lima. It’s within walking distance to the Congress and the Presidential Palace. Within the surrounding of a few city blocks, quite many Chinese businesses, restaurants and Chinese fraternal/cultural associations can be found.

Gospel Center: In 3/2004, the Lima Chinatown Alliance Gospel Center began in the heart of Chinatown.

Services offered: Gospel literature, audio/visual material, free medical clinic, special topic seminars, counseling, introductory class to Spanish, and Bible study.

4. San Juan de Miraflores
Location: The District of SJM is located in the south of the City. It is an under-developing area of Lima. Together with the adjacent Districts of Villa Maria del Triunfo and Villa El Salvador, SJM is very attractive to the new Chinese immigrants due to its developing nature with more business opportunities.

Mid-night Bible Study: In March 2006, during the Lima Chinese Restaurant Campaign and STM effort, we discovered that there were many chifas run by people from the Province of Fujian. Some of them had prior contact with Christianity back in China. In April we started a bi-weekly Mid-night Bible Study in a cabina de Internet where is frequented by many Chinese expatriates in the surrounding area to get on-line and make long distance phone calls back to China.

On average there are 23 people attending the Bible study.

Mission Point--Iquitos

Location: Iquitos is a port city in the north of Peru in the Amazon jungle where the River Amazon initiates. It takes an hour and half by plane from Lima. There are close to 100 Chinese owned tiendas (shops) and chifas combined. Most of them are Cantonese. There are a sizeable Hakanese originated from Guang-dong.
STM Campaign: Starting in 2006 the San Borja CAC has adopted Iquitos as its missionary target. Two STM teams were sent in 2006 (May and November).

Vision & Challenges

Evangelism
It’s been estimated that the Chinese population in Peru is about 150,000 persons and the Christian to population ratio is at 1:1000. To reach 5% goal, each present Chinese Christian believer would need to convert 50 people for Christ.

Church Planting
The great majority of Chinese immigrants reside in the Capital City of Lima. Enumerating the pockets of current Chinese population within the City, there are at least five more Chinese church plants are necessary: Lima downtown, Callao, Comas, Surco, Miraflores, and San Juan de Miraflores.
Co-Laborers and ministry opportunities
The work is plentiful, but the laborers are few! We currently are in need of two more Chinese Christian worker-couples to conduct pastoral/discipleship and evangelism/church-planting ministries. And there are more work to do: worship leading, preaching, discipleship training, follow-up visitation, Vacation Bible School, Youth Camp, special topic seminars, medical clinic, music concert, evangelistic events, personal evangelism, prayer walk, etc.

“Chinese-Alliance Center”
To further the growth and expansion of the new ministries, we are in need to build a Multi-Purpose Community Center that would facilitate outreaching into the Chinese community and ministering to their needs. The center would also provide space for the CAC of San Borja, thus bridging the community and the church. The budget for the project is $350,000. To date we have raised $150,000.

Any gift towards this purpose may be mailed to:
The Christian & Missionary Alliance
Donor Accounting
P.O. Box 35000
Colorado Springs, CO 80935-3500
(Please put in the memo space: for Peru Chinese Evang/Ch Planting)

Prayer Requests
1. Rising of local believers to be disciples & church leaders
2. Building of the Chinese-Alliance Center in San Borja
3. Co-workers in ministry to be filled with His Spirit and be faithful in His Service
4. The Second generation ministry and its co-workers
5. Against dark binding forces (gambling, idolatry, ancestor worship, long hours of work and worries)
6. Joint efforts with STM teams
7. Sharing of the Gospel through the monthly distribution of the Herald-Peru Edition (3,000 copies) & the Zhong Xin Magazine (200 copies)
8. Additional full time co-laborer couples

9. Pray against the Jehovah Witnesses’activities targeting the Chinese in Peru. Their work is conducted by Mandarin speaking Japanese and Korean couples.

Peru Chifa Fellowship Ministry

Dear Chifa Fellowship Coworkers,

Last Thursday during our Los Olivos Coworkers' Meeting, the subject of the need to start new Chifa Fellowship Meetings in Lima was brought up. There are other areas in Lima that have concentrations of Chifas and are not being cared for at this moment.

The discussion caused us to see the need to write a summary of the chifa ministries in Peru.

Los Olivos Distric (橄欖區)
Since April 2006, the Los Olivos Church started a monthly Chifa Fellowship Meeting (from midnight to about 3:00 am in the morning). It usually falls on the 3rd Tuesday night of every month. The regular attendance is from 20 to 25 people. Occasionally we have special outreach program which could draw up to 40+ people. We have met nine times to date. The program around a midnight meal (宵夜) has proven attractive to the attendees. Various chifa owners, who are members of the Los Olivos Church, are taking turns to host the meeting. A "friendly competition" has been established.

San Juan de Miraflores (聖華區)
Also in April of 2006, the San Borja Church started a bi-weekly Bible Study Meeting for the Da-Pai-Dang (大排檔) chifa owners in the southern region of Lima which comprises three developing Districts (San Juan de Miraflores, Villa Maria de Triunfo, and Villa El Salvador). The Bible study is held on every 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month. Unlike Los Olivos: first, the SJM Bible Study Meeting is held in an Internet cafe that is frequented by many Chinese immigrants to make overseas phone calls. Second, the immigrants here are most from Fu-Jian Province where those in Los Olivos are from Guang-Dong. The average attendance at SJM is 25 people including those who are leaders from San Borja Church.

Royal Special Outreach
After the 2006 Lima Chifa Evangelistic Campaign (March 2006), we returned to the famous Chifa Royal (富臨門酒家), not once but twice, to hold larger scale campaigns:
Cantonese Opera (粵曲新唱) in May 2006
The Story of 3-Sons (三個兒子的故事) in January 2007
Since the Chifa Royal is attractive and centrally located, over 110 people attended each time.
On the week before Easter Sunday, we have schduled another big event at the Royal, it will be on Tuesday 4/3/2007.

Please pray for the existing work among the chifas!

As mentioned at the beginning of this e-mail, there are other areas with many chifas that aren't being cared for, please continue to uphold them in your prayers!

Pray for more workers to start new chifa fellowship meetings accross Lima! And pray for someone who will dedicate themselves to full-time chifa ministry in Lima!
